An impressive history: since 1979, the G-Class has stood for unmistakable off-road capability and operational safety. The base vehicles have been continuously developed over the years – know-how from the series production of the G-Class for the civilian market also flows continuously into the design and technology of the vehicles for the state and authorities.
The G-Class combines tradition and innovation, and its 40-year history is a very eventful one. In addition to continuous model maintenance and further development, Mercedes-Benz has always opened new chapters in terms of performance and capability with new model series of the G over the course of time.
Commitment and expertise that has taken the off-roader from the Puch G to today's BR464 – and will certainly take it much further.
The success story of the G-Class at a glance.
1972
Start of cooperation between Daimler-Benz AG and Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG. The common aim: development of a vehicle that sets standards on and off the road in challenging conditions – for commercial and state customers and for private individuals.
1979 – the model series 460
Presentation of the G-Model from model series 460, which is manufactured completely by hand at the Graz plant. The off-road vehicle is based on a solid ladder-type frame with coil-sprung rigid axles and is available with two wheelbases and five different body variants.
