An impressive history: since 1979, the G-Class has stood for unmistakable off-road capability and operational safety. The base vehicles have been continuously developed over the years – know-how from the series production of the G-Class for the civilian market also flows continuously into the design and technology of the vehicles for the state and authorities.

The G-Class combines tradition and innovation, and its 40-year history is a very eventful one. In addition to continuous model maintenance and further development, Mercedes-Benz has always opened new chapters in terms of performance and capability with new model series of the G over the course of time.

Commitment and expertise that has taken the off-roader from the Puch G to today's BR464 – and will certainly take it much further.

The success story of the G-Class at a glance.

1972

Start of cooperation between Daimler-Benz AG and Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG. The common aim: development of a vehicle that sets standards on and off the road in challenging conditions – for commercial and state customers and for private individuals.

1979 – the model series 460

Presentation of the G-Model from model series 460, which is manufactured completely by hand at the Graz plant. The off-road vehicle is based on a solid ladder-type frame with coil-sprung rigid axles and is available with two wheelbases and five different body variants.

1980

Delivery to the German riot police and the Federal Border Guard (long-wheelbase 280 GE and short-wheelbase 230 G).

1982

Launch of the 230 GE and winning of the Swiss Army tender.

1983

Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur win the passenger-car category of the "Paris-Dakar" Rally in a 280 GE.

1985

The entire model series 460 is given two differential locks as standard.

1990

W460 becomes W461 (230 GE and 290 GD).

1992 – the model series 461

The model series 461 is introduced.

The German Federal Army receives 12,500 vehicles of the "Wolf" model.

1998

The 290 GD (model series 461) with a precombustion chamber naturally aspirated engine is replaced by the 290 GD Turbodiesel with direct injection and is available with a driver's airbag. The 120 hp 5-cylinder turbodiesel is exclusively available with automatic transmission.

2001

Launch of the 270 CDI with very efficient common-rail diesel engine.

2006

The German Federal Army updates its fleet with the long-wheelbase W461 Station G 270 CDI "Greenliner" and with the G 300 "Greenliner".

2010

As part of a tender for Australia the product range of model series 461 is extended to include a 6x6 – a variant which is not available thus far in the official and state sector.

2021

With the series 464, Mercedes-Benz presents the new G-Class for Rescue and Special Operations at the world premiere in the G-Class Experience Center in Graz.
